Semiotics of the kitchen – Martha Rosler

I like how Martha Rosler has used a post modern technique to mock society’s idea and women and the kitchen. By presenting each kitchen utensil (mainly traditional items that are out of date or rarely used) in a violent and disturbing way, she challenges this stereotypical idea that in the kitchen is where women belong. The simplicity of the filming being black and white, and only featuring her monotone voice with strange movements creates awkwardness through the exaggeration of her actions. Watching for the first time, I wasn’t sure if the clip was supposed to be humorous and left me feeling anxious and unable to know I was supposed to respond. Although it lasts for six minutes and is very linear and repetitive, I can’t help being anxious and feeling suspense as to what she is going to do next.
